What is Chase Sapphire's refer-a-friend program?
Chase Sapphire Preferred and Chase Sapphire Reserve both have a refer-a-friend program that lets existing cardholders earn bonus points by referring friends and family. When your referral is approved for the card and meets the minimum spending requirement, both you and your friend earn points.
It's one of the more generous referral programs in the credit card world, and one of the most searched.
How many points do you get?
The exact bonus varies and Chase updates it periodically, but generally:
- Referrer (existing cardholder): Typically earns 10,000-15,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points per successful referral, up to 50,000 points per year
- Referee (new applicant): May receive a bonus on top of the standard sign-up offer, though this isn't always guaranteed and depends on the current promotion
Keep in mind the referee's bonus is separate from the card's standard welcome offer. Using a referral link doesn't necessarily mean a larger bonus than applying directly. Always compare both offers before applying.
How to find your Chase Sapphire referral link
If you're an existing Chase Sapphire cardholder, here's how to get your personal referral link:
- Log in to your Chase account at chase.com
- Navigate to "Refer a Friend", found under your card's benefits or in the account menu
- Search for the Sapphire Preferred or Reserve card
- Copy your unique referral link and share it with friends
You can also find the referral section in the Chase mobile app under your card's details.
How to use a Chase Sapphire referral link
If someone has shared a referral link with you:
- Click the referral link. It should take you directly to the Chase Sapphire application page.
- Complete the application as normal
- If approved, meet the minimum spending requirement (typically $4,000-$5,000 in the first 3 months)
- The referral bonus is credited to the referrer's account after you meet the spending threshold
Important: You cannot refer yourself or apply through your own referral link. The applicant must be a new Chase Sapphire cardholder. Existing cardholders or those who have held the card in the past 48 months are typically not eligible.
Does the referral link give a better bonus?
Not always. Chase sometimes runs elevated sign-up offers through their website (80,000-100,000 points) that can actually exceed what a referral link offers. Always check both:
- The public Chase website offer
- The referral link offer
Apply through whichever is higher. Your friend earns their referral bonus regardless of which sign-up bonus you receive.
Can you refer for both Sapphire Preferred and Reserve?
Yes. Chase runs separate referral programs for each card. If you hold both (which is rare, as Chase typically limits one Sapphire card per person), you'd have separate referral links for each.
Most cardholders hold either Preferred or Reserve, not both.
